SHADES OF DEATH ROAD

Avella features the Shades of Death Road.  A featured stop for paranormal researchers.  The origin of the name is unknown but there are many stories about the Shades of Death Road from trapped underground miners to spirits and shadows haunting the street.  The street features an annual ten-mile run/hike which benefits local fire departments called the “Shades of Death 10 Mile Run”.

MEADOWCROFT ROCKSHELTER

This historic venue is unique.  Many believe this preserved site is unlike any other in North America. It features three villages and a Rock shelter.   Archaeological research proves there were inhabitants 19,000 years ago.  Radiocarbon dating was used to confirm this.  Samples of charcoal from firepits tested in a radiocarbon lab at the Smithsonian Institute confirmed this. Meadowcroft is a National Historic Landmark and provides valuable insight about the area’s original habitants, hunters and gatherers.

The three villages highlight a 16th Century Eastern Woodland Indian Village, an 18th Century log cabin and open-sided trading post, and a 19th Century Historic Village.  Meadowcroft is affiliated with the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.  It is likely one of the oldest sites featuring original inhabitants in North America.  Meadowcroft was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005.
